Quiet Back Roads and a Truck Camper

Have anyone else also discovered the very pleasant experience of traveling the quiet back roads of America? I found some I can go for hours at 45 and 50. It so cool..... almost no one else on the road and no rat race interstate. It's wonderful fun time to me.

Just wondering if anyone else takes that extra time tossing the clock and calender, or am I the only one?

X2. We are the same. We avoid the interstates and large cities.
  • Yep, even dragging a 41 foot 5er, I'll take the back roads of America any day over interstate travel. We travel interstates only when absolutely necessary. Of course, traveling back roads takes more time. But if traveling, the objective IS NOT speed, it's really about the experience at the moment.

Now, I do avoid gravel roads. Been on some doosies over the years though.

I became a road warrior before the interstates. A road like Route 66 was a great experience. We did not push the old car much past 45-50 mph most of the time.
  • I live right at 200 miles from any freeway in all directions.I like not having to deal with them and the traffic.. Backroads is the only way to travel.

  • We went to Alaska last year and traveled the "back" roads the entire trip. William Least Heat Moon wrote a book, Blue Highways, and that was the inspiration for us to travel as he did, exploring and discovering the real American (and Canada).

Truck campers make it easy and fun to slow down and smell the roses.
