Quit the Kayaker's Life?

Greetings All,

I've written a number of questions concerning TCs. Thanks all for all the valuable info.

So one problem I have is that I have an 18 ft sea kayak. Seems too long to put on a cargo trailer. And if I pull a cargo trailer it would be small; something suitable for forest service roads. Ya'll agree with that assessment?

I have rigged roller systems to help me load the kayak by myself on top of a hatchback, but loading it on top of a TC would certainly be much much harder.

I also worry about the total height of the vehicle and bridge clearance on something like a 350/3500 truck with a multi-slider on it's back. .

Seems to me it is time to retire the kayak, doesn't seem to be a practical hobby to drag around with a full-time TC setup.

Your thoughts"

Thanks,
Bill
  • Hmm... I hesitate in bringing it up, but the first thought to me is to maybe try a smaller Kayak?

While I'm not a Kayaker, so can't really appreciate the difference, but I've seen (I'm a Scuba Diver) many different configs from shorter, split, even inflatable? so I would have to think along the lines of, how important is it to get out on the water and can a smaller/short one work in lieu of giving it up completely..

Just thinking out loud here as I'm sure you've already explored those, but ???

or a pulley system. Not for top of camper but roof of Cargo??

    Thoughts given.. heheh,
    Good luck...
  • I've seen modular snap-together plastic kayaks. Don't know if they come in a sea kayak model. The smaller sections are probably way easier to handle than an 18-foot thing.
  • Yes I've thought about that, but I love to roll (Greenland Style).

Not sure I'd be as interested in the sport if I couldn't do that; Need that athletic challenge, ya know the consequence of being stuck underwater and drowning.

    Thanks,
    Bill
  • Rather than abandon kayaks, you might just consider other kayak options, inflatables in particular. The Elements is a great kayak. I have a Advancedframe Convertible, which is a very practical portable kayak. You should take a look, they are not K-Mart type inflatable kayaks.
