Rack and Pinion Pt 2
Watch and wait is officially over. To recap my previous post: 2004 Silverado LT3 EC, 5.3L 1500, 263kmiles. During a routine oil change appt Dealer #1 was asked to check the instrument cluster because the oil pressure gauge maxed. Oil Pressure tested and was normal. Sending switch normal. Cluster was the problem. Got that replaced.
2 days later... blackish drips on garage floor. Back to Dealer #1 and they find the rack & pinion is leaking. Suggest replacement.
Ok...after getting much advice from y'all, I did go to Dealer #2 for a second opinion. Yes, the R&P is leaking...on both sides. Recommend replacement. I replaced the R&P 2 years ago for $1800 (things cost a lot in FL).
Here's where it starts to go sideways. Dealer #2 gives me two bids. One for an AC/Delco part at $1200 including $500 Labor. One for GM OE part $1500. Both are remanufactured with 12/12 warranty.
During D#2's inspection they see the oil filter is leaking. I'm told to take it back to D#1 and that they should "make it right for free". So.... drive back to D#1 and they do take care of the oil filter and apologize.
While there I ask for an estimate to replace the R&P. And this is what sent my head spinning. They estimated $549.00 plus tax. AC/Delco part 12mo unlimited mile warranty. I assumed that was the part only. NO. Entire bid including labor and alignment! I was seriously stunned after hearing $1200/1500 from D#2.
I asked if AC/Delco was as good as the GM OE part and they told me that they were the same thing. They had been seeing GM OE with AC/Delco on the label. GM was just twice the price. Both parts are remanufactured.
I asked again... is the AC/Delco part as good as the pricier GM. They said "it should be".
I am seriously confused by the huge difference in estimates, but will definitely jump on the cheaper bid if that's valid.
In your learned opinions... is AC/Delco better than GM OE? DH and I are mechanically challenged. Sorry for the long post.
