raising camper to clear roof.

I have been using a sheet of plywood with 2x6 stringers in the bed to raise my TC to help clear the roof of my truck. I read somewhere that people are using hard styrene insulation attached to the bottom of the camper. Is anyone here doing this and how is it holding up and how are you attaching it. Thought that this might help with fall temps as I have no basement, and the sheet of plywood is a pain to store when the TC is off the truck.

  • I had a four by eight rack made of very light aluminium 2 by 4 construction. Two of it's horizontals went out to the sides to hold it in place.

The rack was sprayed with truck liner all over. Wasn't cheap, but it came with the super duty truck when I bought it.
  • Why attach the foam to the bottom of the camper ? The only reason I can see is if you don't have a place to store the foam when not in use. It's very light so easy to move.
  • I have a rubber bed liner which works wonders in keeping the camper stable. Just sick amd tired of moving the plywood in and out of the bed. Curious on how people are mounting the pink stuff to the bottom of the camper.
  • I use 2 sheets of 1" insulation board with no plywood. Haven't mounted it to the camper yet. I will need a sheet of 1/4 inch plywood to mount it. Works great.

Keep in mind that a 4x8 sheet is 4608 sq. inches so with a 4000# load that's only 0.868# per sq. inch on a flat surface. In a corrugated truck bed that would probably be about double, or 1.7# per sq. inch.

It seems to keep the camper from sliding around in the bed too.

    Good luck with it.
  • I had to do that years ago when I got my Superdoody. I made a plywood / 2x4 / insulation sandwich under there. Plywood was on the bottom.
Worked great, got some extra R-value out of the floor and raised it all at once.
