Raising trailer height

I have an Okanogan travel trailer with caliper axils. I want to raise the trailer height because the H2O and black/grey tanks are to close to the ground for rough roads. Normally on trailers with a spring axil system you simply flip the axils, and thus raise the trailer height. But the Okanogan has a caliper axil system and thus the "flip method" does not work. Does anyone know of a way to raise the trailer height when the trailer has caliper axils?

  • I have the 26RLS and have wanted to raise mine also but haven't gotten around to it. Any spring shop can do it by cutting the piece that the axels are attached to and welding in a spacer. About 4 years ago I was quoted about a thousand dollars, seemed high.

Go to a spring and axel shop and have a chat. Take pictures of the present set up to show them. As said above ask about increased side load on the frame with the raise.
  • I am thinking heavy duty full rectangular 6 inch by 3 inch channel with some verticle 1/4 inch plate for the stabilizing horizontal bolts would do the trick. All welded to the frame where the current axel system bolts to the frame would work. I am surprised there is not a kit for such an application.
  • Torque flex axels. Yep that is them. I think I get the picture. I thought the spacer with added plate attached to frame (welded) would do the trick. But my RV guy here in the small town was clueless and a search on the net produced no info. There are no springs. Can't lengthen the hangers as there is none. A rigid pair of squareish tube axels with swing arm pivots on ends that act as cushining...... like springs.
  • I don't know the term caliper axle but I'm wondering if it's the same as a torque flex axle. These axles are bolted to the bottom of the frame and do not use hangers or leaf springs.

If that's the kind of axles you have, you should be able to just get some longer u-bolts and a small steel block to make a spacer between the axle and frame.
  • disregard corrective spelling posters. They are not here to help.
Alternative to the axle 'flip' is lengthening the spring hangers , at the same cost or less. This is the only method for lifting torque flex axles. . Any welder can do it in a flash, just be sure to add x members to the hangers to stiffen the raised units side load stesses. Frame side to side flex is the greatest reason for failure.
Oh, by raising the rig, then for your steps and leveling jacks you will need to carry a step stool and extra blocks.
