RAM 2500 6.4 Hemi 3.73 gears, Looking for Opinions

I am looking for opinions on this truck as a new tow vehicle, and what gears to got. Also looking at Ford and Chevy 3/4 tons.

This will be a daily driver, with a short 10 minute commute. My driving style is fairly conservative, I don't really that much about being fast off the line, but like to drive 5 - 10 MPH over on the freeway, up to 70 - 80.

I will be towing a 7250 lbs max travel trailer, maybe 20 times a year, with very little chance of upgrading to a a larger trailer. Currently tow with a 2002 Chevy Tahoe 5.3L 3.73 gears. It seems to tow fine, but I have to be careful with the weight.

My current thought it that this will be more truck that I need, but would not have to worry about anything.

So looking for opinions on the truck, my setup, and what gears to get. I think I prefer the 3.73 over the 4.10 for my style and usage.

Thanks for the info.

  • Looking at a new 2016, crew cab 4x4 short bed, down to that or the F250.

Also, I am in western Washington state, so close to sea level, with some mountains, but nothing to extreme.

Another hope is that the 3.73, will allow lower RPM, so it will run on 4 cylinders more often.
  • What year truck are you talking, used or new?

I had a 2003 2500 quad cab with the 5.7L hemi/3.73 gears and that was spec'd about 8800 lbs. I'd think depending on cab and whether or not it's 4wd you'd easily tow about 13,000 on a new 6.4 with 3.73 gears.

I didn't like the 3.73 ratio because it wouldn't tow as much as the 4.10, but for running around town I guess it was a decent compromise. The 6.4 should get much better mileage than my 15 mpg max.
