Only been to Egypt, Kenya and Tanzania but didn't see a single Land Rover driving all over heck and back on a few trips.

It was mostly AWD Toyota Minivans (probably 2/3) and heavily modified Toyota Land Cruisers out in the national parks...and the drivers all felt the Minivans were better off road vehicles (yes, we did some heavy duty off road work with them).

In the cities and built up areas, it's just normal cars like you would see anywhere else in the world.

Not without multiple engine rebuilds and other major works...at least for the Land Rovers. They are well known to be simple to repair but you needed to repair often.

I suspect part of it is there are some who suggest American trucks can't hold up well in challenging 3rd world conditions but it's really more of a marketing thing. Most people in these countries go Toyota because it's the dominant brand so finding parts is easier...not that Toyota is any more durable.

Here is something newsworthy. Land Rover rolled over on the ravine. And since it landed upright and no one is injured, it went ahead on it's way anyways.

And there a lot of million mile Cummins powered pickups still slashing through the rain and snow. Although those Land Rovers and Land Cruisers were not towing other vehicles for most of their time off road.
