This guys says on the 2500 the rear coils are removed and air bags go in their place. So the 2500 is a true air suspension, while the 3500 is an air assist system.
Not sure I would call the 3500 system air assist, as the two spring leafs would not support much weight. I think it is a simpler method of locating the rear axle.
