- BriskExplorer IIMega cab would have slightly lower payload due to weight, and you may have to run a sliding hitch with the shorter bed.
- missouri_daveExplorerAny way to find out whether or not I need a slider hitch beforehand or is it a trial and error kind of thing?

Trial and error will let you know for certain, but its probably cheaper in the long run to buy a slider. - transamz9Explorer

Not always. The srw mega cab has a 12,300# GVWR so the difference between it and a long bed cc is very little. Dually are about 200 lb difference with the same options. - bighog01ExplorerThe payload and tow rating differences are minimal. I have the mega cab and the payload is around 5500 lbs, can't remember exactly. The big thing is to have a slider hitch. I don't have one but there have been a few occasions where I wished I had one. You just have to be really careful and plan ahead without one.
- MudChuckerExplorerI have the mega, I don't need to slide the hitch ever...
- Rangerman40ExplorerThe payload on my 3500 MegaCab Laramie is just shy of 6k pounds.
- Nicholsfamily05ExplorerWe just traded in our 2012 Mega Cab and bought a crew cab.
Miss the Mega.... Tho it's only been a few months I still miss the Mega.
But when we had the Mega we purchased the slider hitch and have never used it.
We keep it just incase we should ever run into a situation.
Both trucks are short bed - JIMNLINExplorer IIII have a '03 6' 4" short bed Dodge/Cummins and pull the same GN and fifth wheel and bumper pull trailers up to 16k GVWR as my one ton DRW 4x4 long bed chevy.
My old 11200 lb '97 5er has those square/flat profile corners common in that era, so I use a sliding hitch although I seldom use it unless real tight backing conditions.
If I had a new gen trailer with the rounded/notched front corners The slider may not ever be used. - Me_AgainExplorer III

Looking at tow vehicles for a fifth wheel. Is there any reason the Megacab with it's 6'4" bed wouldn't do just as well as the Crewcab with it's 8' bed?
Get the Mega cab dually and you will not worry about the extra weight of the slider hitch.
I choose a B&W manual slider and have 270 pounds of hitch and Demco picture frame. If we end up having to go to a dually with our new Bighorn it will most likely be a Mega dually, which is about a foot shorter than the CC 8' bed truck. Chris
