I would be surprised if the Aisin didn't have adaptive learning...nearly every computer-controlled autobox for light-duty autos has adaptive programming, and they have for quite some time.
That being said, the Aisin is a medium-duty transmission, so I'm not 100% positive. At any rate, I wouldn't worry too much about what gear it likes to pull in. A 6-speed also isn't as sensitive to rear-end ratios compared to 4-speed trannies, since you've got more gears in front to play with. If I had a 6-speed, I would likely not need 4.56's.
I'm not really surprised that your Duramax felt more responsive/powerful. For stock motors, the Ford and Chevy V8's just seem to gain revs faster, while with the Cummins its more like a feeling of steadily gaining momentum as it goes about its business.
Magazine tests appear to bear this out to a degree, with the Cummins being a tick or two slower when accelerating with a load.
Also, the Cummins motor takes a bit of time to break-in. IMHO the best way to get it broken-in is to pull loads with it early in it's life...you need to take it easy on the rear-diff for about 500 miles, but after that I would pull with it as often as you can.
You've got a really nice truck.
That medium-duty engine and transmission is exactly what I'd love to have, should I ever decide to replace my current truck.
