Based solely on the 1 big OBJECTIVE comparison between a gas and diesel pickup being the difference in resale value, apples to apples you'd have to try hard to not recoup the initial cost whether you trade up every couple years or keep for a longtime. Pretty much guaranteed to get most of the up charge back and there's more than an outside shot at getting more than the original cost back.
The other factors, fuel prices, repairs, maintenance are too subjective for a definitive answer. These considerations favor the diesel in fuel mileage but sometimes don't in fuel price and repair $. Not suggesting it's bargain to own a diesel, but the notion that you won't get your money back out of it is typically the opinion of those who are only trying to justify why they didn't buy a diesel and have buyers remorse.
