I have a 1 ton Ram with the 6.4 and I tow a 10,000LB 5th wheel with it. It tows just fine and I get 8.5-10mpg depending on terrain, headwind/tailwind etc. I replaced a Chevy 3/4 ton with the 6.0 and I got 7.5-8mpg towing a 9,000LB travel trailer I had at the time. So the mileage is a little better. The HP and Torque are a little better but nothing to write home about or add to the hype. It's a good engine. It won't perform as well as a diesel engine but I can do a whole lot more camping with the money I saved going gas over diesel.
I towed my 12K fifth wheel with a 2017 Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi. Towed mainly in the flats. It did OK - but at high revs where gas engines make their power. Used it as my daily driver for a 25 mile commute to work - was putting gas in it all the time. I pulled my camper up a very high bridge on 295 and boy did it scream.
Bought the 2018 3500 Ram CTD - fell in love with the towing, and I'm filling up a lot less - way better mileage for commuting. Towing with the 6.4, I could watch the needle move. I made it from my house in North Florida to Hilton Head in less than 3/4 tank of diesel.
I have a fuel rewards card at Shell which gives me 5 cents off a gallon. The difference of price between ga and diesel is a wash for me. No way would I ever tow again with a gas engine.
So not saying one is better than the other but for me, I'd rather sit back and listen to the CTD grunting along steadily up those hills, rather then the 6.4 screaming and clawing.
