Ram 6.4 or GM 6.0?

The DW is finally letting me purchase a newer TV in the spring and I'm going with a gasser again. I am planning to upgrade the TT in a few years to a larger slide unit like a Jayco 28BHBE.

Anyway, I've been researching the Ram 6.4 to death it looks good on paper but has anyone had real experience going from a 6.0 GM to the Ram 6.4 gas? The quality of the Ram trucks has me concerned. I've been reading posts about their transmissions burning out OD clutches and others with blender door problems all in newer (2014 up) trucks. I see tons of Ram 2500s in the used market (most with the 5.7) and they are priced below their GM contenders but should I be concerned the market seems have way more Rams available than GM? Why are people dumping so many newer trucks?
  • According to TFL the Ram fell short up the hill compared to the Chevy. Either way you look at it, al, 3 are good. No doubt you will get a lot of different opinions for sure. I like all 3, but run with the GM 6.0. Love this combo and since the tune was installed it's really woken up. Mine for the record is an 09 6.0 with 6 speed. For 2020 GM is getting a remake, I think that I would wait till then if possible. If u need one next year then drive all 3 pick the best that makes you and your wallet happy.
  • I think all the HD gassers are about as bullet proof as they can get. The GM 6.0 is pretty long in the tooth, which I would consider proof that it's a reliable, hard working engine. The Ram transmissions are reliable as well, but some people don't like the shift points, especially with the 3.73 gears. Ford seems to be the cream of the crop at the moment as long as you are comfy with the aluminum body. I would place the 6.0 at the bottom of my list, but would drive any of them happily.
  • Which one to buy depends on a whole lot of things - your preference, your local dealer, appearance opinion, etc. I don't see that there would be any quality difference between the two - all trucks break.

I had a Ram 2500 with the 6.4L Hemi, and I towed a 12,000 lb fifth wheel RV behind it all through the Canadian Rockies. It did great job power wise, I could almost always accelerate if I wanted to no matter the grade. It got 7-9 mpg with the 21,000# GCW load. Power wise, the Ram 6.4L has proven it will run circles around the GM 6.0L, as the GM is down 50hp and 50tq when compared to the 6.4L Hemi.
  • My 2015 GMC 6 liter gasser with the 6 speed transmission is a nice truck. The cast iron block, port injection, no multi cylinder deactivation nonsense, is as simple and durable a gas motor one could ask for.
  • On the current models I'd look at a Super Duty if you want a gas truck. Best combo of power and transmission you can currently get. Diesel I'd (surprise) favor the Cummins.

Quality wise I think Rams are fine, but you can get unlucky with any of them.
  • I would choose the one I could get the best deal on and the one with the seat that fit my behind the best. #2 is more important than #1 to me.

    Thanks!

Go to the Chevy forums and read about all the Chevy problems; Go to the Ford forums and read about all the Ford problems; Go to the Tundra forums and read about all the Tundra problems; See a pattern here? The Ram tranny is as good as any of the others.

A friend has the 6.2 Ram and loves it.
  • I would seriously consider waiting until GM and Ram release their next gen trucks next year.
