- BigToeExplorerMy apologies. The only RAMs I've ever shopped for are Chassis Cabs, where more than one Aisin automatic transmission has always appeared on the options list. I always have to read the description on Ram's website carefully, and even then, since both of the Aisins are described as 6 speeds, have finally learned to just check the more expensive one, because the descriptions are identical, even though there is a $$$$ price difference between the two. I also recall one transmission was updated in 2013, and received a new model number designation.
Since the title to this thread said Ram automatic vs Aisin, and didn't say "ONLY in a 2016 3500 DRW pickup", it seemed useful to distinguish which Aisin transmission people were reporting their experiences about, because a 2012 AS68RC might offer a different experience than a 2016 AS69RC, and a 2015 Aisin in a diesel pickup might offer a different experience than a 2015 Aisin in a chassis cab. They are all different part numbers. - BedlamModeratorThe chassis cab Hemi uses the Aisin. You are correct that this one is not available in the pickups.

Different Aisin transmissions:
There is the AS66RC for the Hemi 6.4 and the AS69RC for the Cummins 6.7. The AS68RC was replaced with the AS69RC. There is also a difference if you have one of the PTO packages.

Sorry, but I believe the Hemi's have a 66RFE inhouse tranny in the pickups.
AS66RC Chassis cab trucks in 2014+ had an option of this or the 66RFE, so I assume these are Hemi powered ones.

The 68RFE is a no-cost option as is the manual G56 transmission, they changed this begining with MY16 when the Aisin price dropped from $2,995 to $2,595.
I would bet that they moved the cost to the base cost of the truck then! Chris - boshogExplorer

No they cost the Delta between the two. You get a lot more than a lower first gear. Chris
Delta? Enlighten me.
The 68RFE is a 600 dollar option. 2600-600=2000 for the Aisin upgrade.

It would help if you establish which Aisin automatic you are talking about when making a comparison.
And technically, one could say there are 3 Aisins in the Rams, because one of them was updated a year or two ago.
For 2016? Please explain.
Maybe he is talking about that you have one and I have one. As they are both AS69RC models, which is the only model RAM is installing now in 3500, 4500 and 5500's. The AS68RC in chassis models was replaced in 2013 with the introduction of the AS69RC in the 3500 pickups.
"The Aisin AS69RC is a medium duty 6 speed automatic transmission offered in the 2013 Ram HD. It is similar in design to the AS68RC, which was only available in chassis cab Rams mated to the 6.7L Cummins. The AS69RC is one of three transmissions offered beginning the 2013 model year, and will be standard on the high output version (385 hp/850 lb-ft) of the 6.7L Cummins. The transmission is larger and more robust than both the AS68RC and 68RFE. Ram claims the transmission has a 64% higher input torque capacity than the 68RFE. It is manufactured by Aisin Seiki, a Japanese automotive parts supplier. Though actual input torque capacity is unknown, its application suggests it is in the 850-950 lb-ft range. For comparison, the AS68RC has a max input capacity of 750 lb-ft. The AS69RC also replaces the AS68RC in chassis cab models for 2013. Its wide ratio spread provides low gearing for tow applications, while a relatively high 0.63 second overdrive keeps engine rpm low at highway speeds to maximize fuel economy."

In 2015 the 68RFE is a 600 dollar option. 2600-600=2000 for the Aisin upgrade. They seem to have priced things differently in 2016?
