  • My Aisin 3500 tows in 5th gear in tow haul, and is getting pretty good mileage. There is a difference however.

    The Aisin has a .77 5th gear where as the 68RFE has a .82 5th gear.

6th gear in both is .63.

    Gear: Ratio:
    1 3.23 : 1
    2 1.84 : 1
    3 1.41 : 1
    4 1.00 : 1
    5 0.82 : 1
    6 0.63 : 1
    R 4.44 : 1

    Gear: Ratio:
    1 3.75 : 1
    2 2.00 : 1
    3 1.34 : 1
    4 1.00 : 1
    5 0.77 : 1
    6 0.63 : 1
    R 3.54 : 1

The Aisin lower first gear aids in getting a load moving.

The only place the 68RFE wins is with the lower reverse gear.

When you look under the hood, if the tranny dip stick is on the drivers side it is an Aisin. If it is on the passengers side it is a 68RFE.
  • In SRW truck they're rated to tow the same.
Another benefit is you get the HO motor with the Aisin. 385 HP, 900 FTLB!!
    I love the Aisin.
  • I have had the 68 and now the Aisin. My 68 was dependable, but did not like the heavier weight of my Mobile Suite when starting off from a start when on an incline. The Aisin seems to lock up and take off smoother.
  • The Aisin gives you the option of a transmission PTO. I highly doubt that is relevant to you. If you're building a really heavy duty towing hauling truck I'd get the Aisin. Otherwise, the 68RFE should do fine.
  • The two automatics offered are the 68RFE and the Aisin.
The 68 RFE is a proven durable automatic. According to some reports it has fewer reported problems than the Allison 1000 found in GM products.
Choose the Aisin only if your going to be towing really heavy full time.
