I tow a 9500lbs trailer and longer trips I tow with cruise control on. Only on the most rare of occasions has it downshifted from 6th gear for me. That was on a several mile long steep grade through the mountains of western Pennsylvania and it shifted into 5th going up the same hill there and back with cruise set on 69mph. Other than that, it stays in 6th towing.
