We suggest they use the butyl tape between the flange for the vent and the roof. Screw the vent down, and run a ¼” to 3/8” bead around the vent. The butyl take is the primary seal, the lap sealant is the secondary seal – extra protection. Over a period of time, the butyl tape may compress unevenly (through vibration or weathering). The lap sealant will remain pliable and keep the seal.
