I put the wood piecces there, they are held on with carpet tape, no holes in the counter top, the only real reason they are even there is they hold the light switch I put in to turn on a light when entering the 5th wheel, as far as taking up space, No it dose not take up that much space, really it keeps stuff from falling off of the counter, and keeps me from hitting my head on the upper cabnet when I don't put the slide out, I also like the way it looks, so I think I'll keep it as it is. Look at the link in my sig and you will see all of the mods I have made, most have a reason.
