If your idea is to enjoy camping in less accessible locations and you love the outdoors and are an independent sort who likes doing your own thing and doesn't mind a little extra work, a TC might make sense, but if you just want to tour the West, it's a hell of a lot cheaper and more comfortable to just drive your car and stay in motels. Any TC is going to cost about 3 times as much to drive as a car, and site fees are typically significant, especially if you need good wi-fi for work. Add in the amount you'll lose buying and reselling a rig, and the TC idea is an economic disaster.
If you're really curious, rent. After a few weeks of dealing with pump outs, propane, leaking plumbing, being trapped in a small space when the weather sucks, cramped or outdoor showers, micro-waved food, insects, dead batteries, etc., etc. you may decide a TC isn't for you. On the other hand, you may love it.
