re-entering camping - what would you buy?

My wife and I and two young boys, with dogs, are looking to get back into camping. We had a Coleman Sante Fe pop-up trailer for years, sold it two years ago, and now are keen to get back into it. My boys are pumped and keep re-telling camping stories. I did not know they missed it that much!

We own a 2011 Silverado 1500, quad cab, short box, tows 9500lbs I think. It has a brake controller built in, and a 5.3 engine. This truck looks like it needs to tow!

Travelling from Ontario to Yellowknife, North West Territories, for work and want to drive there with the TT. Can do it in 8 days, but want to do it over 2-3 weeks to see the sites. I am a big guy and those 74X60 queen size beds are too small. I need a 80X60 queen bed or able to retrofit the smaller beds for more leg room. I want two big bunk beds, like those double-double bunks. Slide outs for more room, outside shower, and outside kitchen would be nice.

I am looking at the StarCraft Autumn Ridge 289BHS: option B, or maybe the Autumn Ridge 278BH.

Will be using it for family fishing adventures, probably off the grid a lot, but will not pass up a serviced lot. Will also use it as a guest house when visitors come by over the summer.

New or used? weight distribution hitch? Sway bar? Just a ball hitch?

Will not camp in the thing over the winters in the arctic of course, but will it self destruct just sitting at -40? I may want to drive it south when the winter comes.

Any advice is appreciated.
  • Can't respond to the make and model you are looking at but being a boondocker (off the grid) and having owned everything from an F150 towing a 17' and 22', up to an F250 towing a 27' and 32' TT to now owning an F350 DRW towing a 11.5k, 35' fifth wheel - you will want to look for good sized holding tanks - fresh, gray, and black. Some good sized TT's have 50 gallon fresh, but even with 35 gallon, you can work it with a little "training" for the kids. Even though you won't be camping in frigid temps, you still want to make sure that model has good insulation even for fall comfort and for hot weather. If you plan to do a lot of off the grid camping, you may want to invest in a generator as a supplement. It'll make life a lot easier and even more enjoyable. As for your towing setup - yes, most definitely get a weight distributing hitch and sway control. Both will make towing a charm and add to the safety factor. Even when we purchased our first at 17', we got the weight distribution and sway control. Your truck may tow 9600 (or was it 9500?), but you still have to account for your cargo (family) in the truck - total gvw there too.
  • Don't go by the tow rating. A 1/2 ton truck with full compliment of people is not going to tow anywhere near 9500 lbs. because your suspension won't hold it safely.

Your engine might be able to pull it..but your suspension won't hold it..so to speak.
