Real Life Mpg with RM 3500 DRW

I am thinking about swapping my beloved 2005 Ram 2500 for a 2011 Ram 3500 Drwbut I am concerned about the mpg . I currently get 10 to 11mpg pulling my 14000 Big Horn fifth.

What could I expect with A 2011 Ram 3500 with dual rear wheels. Lets hear real hand calculated numbers being experienced by some of the forum members.

Thanks for your input.

  • The 2011 won't pull down the same number's your 2005 does, but it will pull a bit stronger.
That said if I was looking at pre owned Ram truck's I'd just skip ahead to the 2013 MY for the introduction to DEF emission systems for better mileage. Still ain't going to beat your 2005 5.9 for MPG though :W
FWIW I get between 10-12 towing 15K depending on wind, terrain & speed. Usually best speed MPG is about 60-65 MPH for me. 75 MPH it drops off big time.

They are all pretty close (Ford, GM, and RAM) when loaded and empty.

In this test, the 2011.5 RAM 3500 DRW got 8.5 mpg avg pulling over 19,000 pounds over 2000 miles. Ford got 9.5, GM was just over 9.

I believe this test was with the HO model. That was omly available with the asian? Transmission. I think, but not sure, it still came with the standard diesel.

I would slso like to hear some experience with fifth wheels weighing around 14, 000 lbs.
    Thanks
  • I have a 2004 Dodge, diesel DRW long bed, auto, 410 rear end I get 11 or better towing my 36 ft fifth wheeler, KZ StoneRidge. Sometimes I use tow haul sometime I don't need it.
    Good luck.
