Your post got me thinking. I could probably carry your AF 990 with less than 8000 on my rear axle. My truck is a super cab not a club cab, I have 2wd instead of 4wd and I have SRW instead of duals. So I should weigh less at the scale on the rear axle. Plus I don't have dogs anymore. :)
Do you carry a lot of heavy options on your AF?
My wife really likes the AF campers.
It has the usual heavy options: A/C and Generator.
Let's say you save a couple hundred pounds, that's still 7,800 +-, or 3,900 lbs per wheel which is clearly 19.5 wheel territory if you want to stay under the max load rating on the tires. I wouldn't hesitate to throw on 19.5's if that is the TC your wife likes though :). We love it and it's probably the only TC we will ever own.
