Rear camera on a Lance camper

I bought a new Lance 850 camper a couple weeks ago, and have a question about it that I hope someone here can answer.

I want to install a wireless rearview camera, and according to the manufacturer's literature, the unit is pre-wired for that sort of thing. I assume there is a 12v D.C. wire and a ground wire under the siding above the door somewhere, but don't want to start cutting until I know their exact location.

Does anyone here know the position of the wires?

  • I have not found an effective wireless setup that sells for under $700. The distance is too great from the camera to the cab of the truck for the less expensive ones. One fellow was able to get a wireless to work by running wires from the camera to the front of the trailer and mounting the transmitter at this location so the signal to receiver distance in the cab was reduced by 75%.

I have a tailgate camera on my pickup and much of the time it is worthless as any strong backlight, which includes the sky during the day, will darken the screen so much that I cannot use the camera. There are ones that have a sunshade and these are going to be more effective during daylight hours. These can be adjusted to show a hitch for backing up and tilted to show the road behind you.

Some cameras will work with certain GPS units so the same 4" x 5" screen can be used for navigation and for the backup camera. Backup cameras can be wired into the truck if it already has a cab monitor as well. For this type of work it is worth talking to a local installation shop (same guys that do car alarms and stereo installations) and see what they would charge.
  • We installed a wireless camera outside above the door an used the power that services the three marker lights. That way all you have to do is cut on your lights! Ours works great !
  • Mine is wired so that when it's shifted into reverse the system functions. Or When the switch on the monitor is turned on the system is on until it is switched off.
  • My Lance came with the wiring prepped just above the rear door. I wired it to be on full time. The camera is wired and is controlled by an on/off switch. The Voyageur brand that I have also has a microphone on the camera. Handy for "walking" it in to a tight place.

    See you out there,
  • skipbee,
Is the prewired system wired to the back up lights? I'm with you on wanting to be able to see when I'm traveling down the highway. I wired my own and tied into a running light.
  • On our 2005 1121 Lance the wires were on the drivers side at the top of the rear door. A call to Lance will get you the exact location of the wires in your rig. It is a very worthwhile addition. We have a wired system not a wireless. We keep it on constantly when underway.
  • I don't know the answer to your question but start preparing yourself for an answer that tells you the mounting spot is much lower, like license plate level. Most companies think you want to see the hitch as opposed to over the top of what you are hauling.
