Rear Hitch Carrier w/Camper

My apologies if this answer is in a forum as I was unable to find one. We are looking for a hitch carrier for the rear of our truck and are wondering how people use this with respect to getting into the camper easily. Does anyone have any pics, etc.? I'm thinking the step from the ground to the carrier might be simple as the carrier can be lower than hitch height. Our camper does not hang down outside of and past truck bed so the entry is quite high so access from carrier to door is what we're wondering on how to set up. Our camper currently has the metal step, 5 or 6 of them (one of the death steps :)) regardless it won't be usable once carrier is put on. My husband was talking about having a piece of metal welded onto middle part of carrier to act as a flat step for middle of carrier and just use left and right of carrier for actual cargo, then come up with something sturdy to leave on that metal piece welded on, to get into camper. Does anyone have any suggestions and if so, if you've done this, pictures would be awesome as well. Thank you. Tracy

  • Hi Tracy,

Here's what we do. This has the advantage of keeping the extra weight closer to the rear axle so there is less stress on the suspension and the axle.

  • There is a company called StowAway Carriers.

    http://www.fasttrackracks.com/store/p/555-StowAway-MAX-Hitch-Cargo-Carrier.aspx

They have several upgrades. The unit will hold 200 pounds and has a locking system and will swing out of the way to allow access to your stairs. You can get LED lights. It fits a 2" hitch.
