Rear Porch

In response to a separate topic it was mentioned that the tailgate should be left off and some sort of porch could be built. This idea has merit and interest me.

Would you be kind enough to share your thoughts, designs and especially photos on the idea of a porch?

Pros/Cons most welcome.

Thanks Y'all,
  • ^Yup if you can dream it , you can build it, sounds like it works well for your friend, but I’ll let the lack of “porches” on the back of TCs in general speak for itself and the limited usefulness of them.

Not really certain the feasibility of a “porch”. It would be extremely challenging to build something large enough to use that folds up and isn’t obtrusive.

Having a porch is awesome, especially if you are at the beach and have a rear door camper. Not that hard to build one either, my friend bought an aluminium floating dock for jet skis and removed the floats and installed hinges to the back bumper of his 1181 and installed straps to the rear jacks for support, he can fold it up easily and roll out, he installed brake lights on the bottom of the porch so when it folds up he doesn't lose that.
  • I read your other threads, don’t recall the porch discussion, but there’s no reason to remove your tailgate unless you wish to, or if there’s some part of the camper hanging down that would conflict with the tailgate.
Also if you have decent mud flaps paint damage is not an issue either.

I use a hitch cargo carrier and built a box/step on it for entry. I can get in with one large step but usually use a 2 step stool for 3 steps total. I stabilize the carrier with small chains to the TC on each end.

A milk crate with plywood on the bottom also works as a step and is my back up. Make sure you have an outside handle on the TC to grasp.

You would do yourself a great service by taking the time to look through " truck camper university " in the stickies at the beginning of this section . It addresses many of the questions you have posted . It will not answer all your questions ,and I am not suggesting you don't ask questions , but it will give you a good background in a subject you seem to lack much knowledge , namely , truck campers . There is a whole section there on the topic of porches so you can see what others have done . Your questions and the answers to them will be much more meaningful to you .
  • We used to have a short bed camper, and we used the hitch receiver cargo carrier, worked great as a step/cargo carrier. We stored our generator, and a variety of other items along with using it as a step.
