I have not been RVing long. Have two little girls (4) and (2) so my time packing and unpacking is crazy. I dawned on me this week end at the PA Grand Canyon that I do not need both propane tanks. I never go for more than a long weekend and we never dry camp where we would need all that fuel. Just some for fridg while on the road. I have (2) 30lb tanks. Full they are almost 60lb. I am removing one of the tanks for weight saving. What size tanks are everyone else using? Anyone else in this situation?

Folks generally have two so that when one goes empty, the system will switch to the other. If you need to save weight, I'd toss both 30s and invest in two 10s, instead, to keep the functionality of two tanks.

I'd keep two for the backup function, so switch to 20# instead maybe. However, propane tanks aren't your problem with packing and unpacking and if a difference in 30# tongue wieght makes a difference I would be looking somewhere elseI have 2 30# tanks and if I can get them to fit will switch to 2 40# tanks. Like you don't use much propane except in the fall and then running the heater can use lots of use of quickly. Last thing I want to worry about is having propane.

We have 20lb tanks. But more importantly, thanks for the info on Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon. We never heard of it but is looks interesting.

Not to be a naysayer but do you think dumping a 30 pound tank will save you money? What would be the reason for not wanting to carry an extra few pounds. I dont think my truck would know the difference. Really I am curious for the reason..

On my previous HTT I rearranged the tongue area and went with dual batteries and a single 30# tank (couldn't fit 2 batteries & 2 tanks.) What I did do was buy an adapter to let me use a 1# disposable propane bottle and connect it to the regulator pigtail. I used it once - ran the 30# dry on the last night of the season.Yeah, I'm curious as to why you'd go to a single tank.

I have rarely used one tank up on a small trip, yet I don't remove the second tank. You never know when you are going to need more LP. If you camp where it is cold, or you do a lot of cooking it is nice to have extra LP. The automatic changeover regulator makes the setup real nice. Keep the second tank. If the weight means that much to you, purchase two aluminum (high dollar) 30# LP tanks. That will save you a little weight.

My thoughts exactly. If you are trying to get a precise/critical tongue weight maybe 30# will help. But to just reduce your CCC it's. not practical. You will not notice the effect of losing 30#'s at all

How long will it take to recoup the cost savings of purchasing new tanks over any supposed fuel savings?

Big deal. 1000 lb will make a difference but if you worry over 60, leave the kids at the Canyon and let them walk home. It will do them good. LOL Don't sweat the small stuff.Sell it and buy tents.

We have a pair of standard 20# (5 gal) tanks on our rig, but with such a low CCC, I can see the logic behind carrying just a single tank. I can't believe RV manufacturers design rigs with low CCCs barely allowing someone to carry propane or a full tank of water, but it seems to be more commonplace than I would have imagined.

The Aerolite 30' TT is rated for 6000lb. The sticker in the TT lists 59 lb for propane. With Fresh water full and (1) 59 lb propane tank theres 626lb CCC. No reason to drag that tank around when I'm not using it. Winter is another thing. One Oct. we went I had a leak and ended up taking a dehumidifier. It made enough heat and kept it dry so I did not need Propane. Used campsite electric. Not my gas.

Just looked at a new TT with 5gal tanks. The selling point is they can be exchanged at the tank trade-in places. I'll keep my two 7gal tanks, thank-you.........

PA Grand Canyon is awesome. 62 mile rail trail. swim in the creek. beautiful views. We like the rail trail. Can tent camp at some spots on the trail.
