Reese SC Friction Pads

I have Reese SC weight distribution hitch that is a little over a year old. We recently bought a new trailer with a tongue weight close to the upper rating for my current bars. I do have new heavier bars on order that will be here before our next trip.

But the friction pads that the spring bars ride on are starting to fall apart. This actually started happening a little bit before we picked up our new trailer, and in two trips since then has gotten progressively worse. I have also ordered new hangers and pads so those will be replaced as well.

My question is this normal for the friction pads to wear out so quickly? Are they something I should plan to replace annually? I'm hoping the heavier bars will help, but like I said, the pads were already showing wear with our old trailer and on that one the tongue weight was well under the rated weight on the spring bars.

Any feedback or experiences of other SC users?
  • I did call Reese this morning. I do also need to get a different shank for my set up to raise the ball higher on the TV. But the Reese rep really didn't think that was causing my issues with the friction pads so they are sending out a replacement set. Now that's good customer service!
  • It could be that you are going a little over board on the spring bar tension. The spring bar tension should just be transferring enough weight to the front axle to maintain a balanced load on the TV.
  • Not normal. I used them for several years, and had little wear. I did see some ancient ones in a junkpile at a used RV parts place that had them falling apart like that.
