That always turn into state bashing.
If you think California is so bad for living, why do you think all young people want to live there?
What other state can offer $50/hr jobs, where Mexicans at Home Depot will not work in your garden for less than 25?
When you pay more for running business, so commercial fees are high, my registration for old truck in RV status was slightly over $100 a year. Insurance $350 a year.
Property taxes? I paid $2900 property taxes on house in prime area, that I bought 30 years ago. No other state has Proposition 13, like California does.
When lot of Californians moved to Oregon for retirement, they often want to come back as Oregon in winter is not really good place to live, when with lack of Proposition 13 the property tax quadrupled in just few years.
But they no longer afford CA house. No smog in Oregon? Each time I drive there behind older vehicle I have to keep long distance, or the fumes will cost me headache.
So depends what you want to do in your life. I chose Las Vegas for retirement for low house cost, low cost of living, desert weather good for my joints. We are not gamblers, so have lot of pity for friends who moved here from CA only to leave their retirement at casinos. The $9 buffets can compensate the expense only to some degree.
Would I want to work here, or send kids to school, that would make totally different story. Than high insurance and high registration is only small fraction of annual cost of living.
