remove shower curtain track to install extend a shower??

2008 Jayco 311 lgt with a narrow shower with the dreaded shower curtain track installed to the ceiling. I want to install the extend a shower rod in its place for more room.

Has anyone done this? I know I'll be drilling some new holes so what's recommended to seal the new holes so water doesn't get in?

    can you just leave the track and curtain as it is and mount the extended shower rod below it a bit to push the curtain out? if it doesn't work properly after testing it out for a while, then you can worry about removing the old track or just leave it there.
