If you really don't want to spend as much money as the conversion to electric costs, look at converting to this manual crank system. I didn't have the wiring to support an electric one, so my costs would have been very high. I love the crank and use my awning much more often. As a short person who travels alone, I found the spring loaded awning was too difficult as I couldn't reach the strap from the latch side. Now I just take the crank arm, adjust to needed length and crank. Even my son who isn't in love with the RV like me, says the crank was a Great change. Only cost a couple of hundred dollars including labor. I had mine converted at the Good Sam Rally in ATL last year, guy came to my site and did the work in about an hour, and he adjusted my awning bracket up top too.. Don't know if it will work on all brands, but it sure made my Carefree, much more Carefee for me.
