I really appreciate the larger sites and ambiance of Fed/State/City & County parks (campgrounds). A helpful website for me over the years has been US Campgrounds/info. I've found the site to be pretty inclusive.
Note the legend below the map for icon identification purposes. Then, you can either drag the map to an area of interest, or type in a 'city/state' (area) of interest in the space provided in the lower left hand corner of the map. Icons depicting public campgrounds will show up like pins on a map. In a column to the right of the map, you'll see campgrounds listed in alphabetical order corresponding to the pins on the map. Clicking on a particular campground in that list will lead you to a website with additional information regarding that campground. You'll find both developed and undeveloped campsites that are available.
Public (government) parks mentioned above will generally offer a better daily rate than commercial parks, but usually have a two week stay limit. I've only found a few that permitted a monthly stay. If you're going to be in one area for a month, it will be cheaper to get a monthly rate at a commercial park. Travel safe and enjoy.
