Yah. I don’t think there is a downside to private networks. It raises the bar for public networks, keeps traffic down at public sites and allows for an optional better, faster, more user friendly charging experience for those who buy something like a Rivian, Porsche or Tesla. Porsche private network is so far only in Europe. Competition is good. It forces everybody to do better.
Technically Tesla is not a private network as they are open to other manufacturers signing on and further developing the network but no takers to date. I would love to see Jaguar hook up with Tesla. I think that would push me over the edge on that Ipace sitting in Kelowna. I can hear it calling me. :).
It's no different from driving your Chev into a gas station to be told only Fords can fuel there. It's a disincentive to buying an EV, especially if you travel distances and can't do all your charging at home.
You have just given reason not to go for that Ipace.
I'm interested in the Q4 Etron that is coming out to replace my Q5 but might go for a Q5 PHEV instead and this is a big reason why.
That ETron is a nice buggy. It’s a CCS car. You’ll have no problem finding public charging. Electrify Canada and Electrify America will probably have some kind of special deal for ETron owners as it is essentially VW’s public/private network. As well any public network will do.
Cheers.
