Technically Tesla is not a private network as they are open to other manufacturers signing on and further developing the network but no takers to date. I would love to see Jaguar hook up with Tesla. I think that would push me over the edge on that Ipace sitting in Kelowna. I can hear it calling me. :).
It's no different from driving your Chev into a gas station to be told only Fords can fuel there. It's a disincentive to buying an EV, especially if you travel distances and can't do all your charging at home.
You have just given reason not to go for that Ipace.
I'm interested in the Q4 Etron that is coming out to replace my Q5 but might go for a Q5 PHEV instead and this is a big reason why.
That ETron is a nice buggy. It’s a CCS car. You’ll have no problem finding public charging. Electrify Canada and Electrify America will probably have some kind of special deal for ETron owners as it is essentially VW’s public/private network. As well any public network will do.

The Q4 etron isn't out yet, it is based on the same platform as the VW ID4 and will be competition for the Model Y. As things stand where I live, if I was travelling up country for a wine run I would be taking my 1t diesel before I would take an EV. I'm just not interested in making hunting for charging stations my particular brand can use as part of my trip.
I'm not interested in vehicles that have brand specific fueling infrastructure and it is something the EV industry and government need to address if they really want them to become truly mainstream.
I get your concerns. But you will never have to hunt for stations. The cars software knows where they all are. You’ll never have to hunt for compatible chargers as they are all compatible with an ETron. (We’ll accept for Tesla Superchargers but they won’t show up on the software anyway). You’ll have no problems taking the ETron Wilbur.
