Road Rider ST Travel Trailer Tires

I have a 27ft travel trailer with 14 inch tires. I have had 3 friends who had blowouts this year causing lots of damage. None of them had the same tires on their trailer that I have on mine but was wondering the good or bad with the road rider tires I currently have on my trailer.

  • From the "for what it's worth dept" I use LT tires on all of my trailers and am happy.
But I am really subbing to the thread to see how long it will take for a mod to jump in and say, "no ST vs LT threads allowed"......or just simply lock the thread down. Should be any time now......:B

Most ST tires are sub-par quality. Many of us with heavier trailers have upgraded to LT truck tires but that would require you to move to 16" rims and probably involve some suspension work since you have 14's now.

Don't want to hijack but, are LT tires safe for trailer use? If they are, that'll be my next tire set. Got to believe, after reading all the negative posts about ST's, that LT's are a better designed tire.

I have a 30 ft sunset creek that weighs 10000 lbs gross , in the owners manual they recommend either LT or St tires as long as they have the correct weight rating . ( Mine have 2000 lbs to spare ) I personally think that that would be a wise choice , others may disagree . But that is my opinion

    That's downright hilarious!

Best that you can do is weigh the trailer and make sure no axle or wheel is overloaded. Ensure the tires stay inflated to their max pressure on the sidewall, and us a TPMS to monitor pressure going down the road. Pay attention to corners, don't hit curbs and such that can damage sidewalls.

I like the one guys crack about the tire needing a shot of penicillin.
  • If keeping 14" tires, the Kumho 857 is probably the best ST tire available. They're very popular with marine trailer owners, and available online @ TireRack.com and other discounters.

It's just a shame that the trailer world doesn't get better quality tires engineered for trailers--instead of the low price, low quality tires coming from unknown companies in the Far East. Blame RV manufacturers for choosing price over reasonable quality.
  • Check out Khumo tires. I hear they have a good 14" LT tire many have used on their trailers with great success. You may need to change rims based on air pressure but may be worth a look and see if they work off the rack.

I have found some bad and some good reviews online.
This one was kinda interesting. Found it on a boat forum I go to.
