Rocks in Dually tires

Starting to get more adventurous with the dually and take the less travelled path. I have always heard stories of rocks getting stuck between the rear tires. Anyone have this happen and how did you get it out and what was the damage like. We used to travel up logging roads and forestry service roads a lot with my SRW, but a little paranoid to do it with my fat bottomed girl.
  • All good suggestions.

Letting air out...works great as long as you have the means to get some back in. DOH...

Other option; just loosen the outside dual.

I catch rocks in the big trucks and don't usually notice until I hit pavement (as others said). But I don't seem to have a problem feeling them in the little guys. Usually catch them fairly early, hence, usually easier to get out too. When they're really wedged, hammers don't work so well. It's still the first tool to grab though.

To respond to the question about ruts and weight on a single tire. To me, it's like a 'what if' question. They're never ending. If it was actually a problem, every truck on the road with duals would have warning stickers to not drive over a curb, as the weight of the entire 1/2 of that axle would momentarily be on that tire. But that's JMHO...
  • It happened several times on my pre-Tiger way out in the boonies in the pre-cellphone era. The first time I was totally surprised, being fairly new to both the RV and to dirt road exploring. My hammer was no help. Two guys working on the nearby phone lines rescued me. They discussed possible solutions, then deflated one tire, got the rock out, and reinflated the tire with their compressor.

After that, I carried a pry bar. Even though that plus the hammer usually did the job, it often took quite a while. And RichieC is correct, there often is not enough room down there to swing the hammer.

And now you know why I bought my SRW Tiger.
  • My friend was in Baja for 6 months, with his dually, had lots flats because of rocks between his tires, took him a while to figure it out, because when his tire went flat the rock fell out
  • A rock the size of a grapefruit can get stuck and you wouldn't know it until you got back on pavement.
Keep driving on rocks with a big rock stuck between the tires and the rocky surface will hammer that rock so far into between the tires that you will have to remove the outer tire to release the rock.
There is just no room to swing a hammer hard enough to loosen a rock stuck like that.
    Twas' my experience.
  • In my trucking days, had to deal with this a lot. long pry bar works great. Put it between the wheels and the ground and back up. most rocks pop right out.
  • I got a little more adventurous with my dually recently, also. I wasn't in an area where rocks were a big problem, but ruts were. It got me to thinking about the risks of a single inner or outer tire carrying the weight of the TC at times, especially when the rig was leaning in that single tire direction.
  • Tires are pretty tough... until you drive a long way with a chunk stuck in there.

Had it several times; hammer, perhaps a pry bar. Never a big deal.

Trailer tires are a different breed however. Usually wherever we catch the rocks in the duals, we're losing trailer tires. The sidewalls are usually not as heavy and they slice easily (talking about other than round rocks..) Lost more than a few of them on some nasty roads. Carry two spares and ran out more than once....
  • Happened to me once in 12 years. Hammer. Not a big risk.
