Present truck had 22,500 kms when I bought it in 2006, put a 4000lb + hard side with slide TC and after a really rough trip to the Baja, decided to go with 19.5's. Picked up the present TC 5 years ago, 1000b's lighter, lower COG but still kept the heavier tires. Now at 241,500 km's, and well past the wear bars,time for the decision.Stay with the Michelins(XDS2), load range H, or try another brand which will probably be cheaper? 30% gravel, 70% pavement, some snow travel although I run studded snows in the winter.Present tires have been great and no flats or anything on the 2 sets of Michelins and I am sure just like before, the carcass will look brand new on the inside when removed from the rim.Oh ya, very little sand travel, some mud.Any comments?Dave

I don't have them, but it's hard to beat what you have for general purposes. I like Hankook DH01s only for the very aggressive tread.

I'm in the same situation, my 19.5 Michelin xds are down to the tread bars. I would really appreciate some information on tires, the Michelins have gotten very expensive.

It is all in how much you are planning to drive. Michelin and Hancock are good value if you plan to put 150,000 km in next 6 years. Tires protected from UV can last up to 10 years, but that is not what I would plan on it. I had 19.5 on my F450 and at one point bought cheap Sailung (?). They lasted me for 56,000 miles. Ride quality is not existent in heavy truck, so can't tell if that was different.

I purchased a set of 4 Toyo 19.5 with wheels 7 or 8 years ago for $100.00 each. WOW was that a deal.They were purchased by the owner at Las Schwab, so I got free wheel swap all those years. I have studded set of Toyo M55's that would go on ever winter.I like the Toyo 19.5's

A couple of years ago some one on here recommended Hercules tires. I bought a set and put them on, they are still on the truck. Wear is great but they won't balance. Tire store said the rims were bent but I doubt that all 6 rims are bent. Taking them to a truck tire shop and have them trued, see if that works. If you can afford Michelins go for it they are on my 02 Thunderbird and do great.

The long-lasting hard rubber will not give good handling in slippery condition.
So for highway driving in good conditions I would definitely go for Michelins, for offroading and bad weather Other brands could be better.

19.5 is commercial and the sidewall clearly states regroovable on the Toyos

I've been Michelin only user for 20 years and they perform excellent on CA roads where slippery condition happen only few times a year.
The long-lasting hard rubber will not give good handling in slippery condition.

Ask how much weight on average the Toyo would take to balance. The Michelin is probably a better made tire. I had 19.5" Toyo previously. They were a good tire. They also took a lot of weight to balance E. I'm now running BFG 19.5's that use Michelin casing. I think it was 4ounces per tire to balance on 19.5's! That's very low.

Just An Update:

I went down to a local tire shop in Vernon BC and received quotes for Michelin and Toyo tires. The Toyo's had a bit more agressive tread than the Michelin but not as many sipes. Michelin has a 16 ply rating, load range "H" and maximum load(single) @ 120psi of 4962lbs.
Toyo has a 14 ply rating, load range"G" and a maximum load(single) @ 120psi of 4650lbs .

Michelin XDS-2 Traction 245/70R 19.5 $479.00
Toyo M920A 133/131n 14-g TL BW 245/70R 19.5 $419.95

Total quote for Michelin including environmental tire levy, balancing, shop supplies and taxes=$2280.32

Total quote for Toyo including environmental tire levy, balancing, shop supplies and taxes= $2015.78

Difference is =$264.54 or $66.13/tire.

Not on 10+ years old tires.
Retread or re-grove usually applies to cutting deeper groves in existing rubber and is done only on commercial tires design for the procedure.
I think you had recap in mind, that adds new rubber with tread to old tubes.

if they're not too old/worried about rot you could get them retreaded MUCH cheap than getting new.
