I have used a folded heavy tarp, just draped over the top of the generator, with big rocks on the corners of the tarp to keep it from blowing away. Just make sure that there is airflow to the front and back of the generator -- no need for clearance over the top.
Putting the generator under the RV would work, I guess, except for the annoying fumes and the noise. Why not put the generator as far away as possible?
And yes, it may be true that it's ok to leave the generator in the pouring rain -- but why take a chance? A tarp is a quick and easy solution.
I should also add that I put the generator on some boards, so that it does not get muddy. Again, the mud might not hurt it, but then I would have to wipe it off before putting it back into my truck. Too much work.
