I am one of the few here that have actually set up a TT to do this. It CAN be done.
Onan Microquiet 4.0
wired with a ATF.
custom stainless steel 26 gallon gas tank for it.
That sounds like a nice setup. I've tried to think of ways to add a generator to my 5th wheel.
One question though, why bother with gasoline to run a genset? The TT has two 30lb propane tanks that should run a genset for a long time. If it were me I'd put a propane carb kit on the generator engine and run from that fuel source to keep things simple.
One drawback may be that you'll use up your propane. Sure, but places like Flying J offer propane fill ups, so you can top off your tanks while you're traveling.

Propane has some advantages: No need for a gas tank, and no carb gumming up when in storage.
It also has some disadvantages. Propane powered generators put out less power.
They also use a LOT of propane.
Propane is harder to find, and almost always takes longer to get than gasoline.
If one is a heavy/frequent generator user, then the propane advantages are largely eliminated.
In my case, propane had little to offer me. YMMV
