You might want to check out crate engines from a place like Summit Racing. Your cost may be about the same and have a warranty.
I built a Chevy 350 using the 1.94 heads, Edelbrock cam, 1.6 roller rockers and the best parts I could find. I stayed with single exhaust because it is in a van, but increased the pipe size and used a Flowmaster muffler. The results was just a little more HP, but the mileage increased about 10%.
I believe that the low compression ratio is the reason I didn't get more power. The timing is advanced to just the point of pinging. That is easy on a van, just remove the engine cover and play with the distributor till you get it right.
