A tie rod end breaking is not as bad as you would think. The affected wheel will turn in or out but you still will have control of the vehicle. As the other wheel will still be connected to the drag link and you will still have control of that wheel.  
The drag link is the one you never want to break. It is connected to the pitman arm which in turn is connected to the steering box. If the drag link breaks you have no control of the vehicle!
