Sales tax question

If I'm a SD resident and purchase. A new vehicle in NC, which state's sales tax do I pay? I believe it's SD. What say you? Thanks in advance.

  • The State you buy it in has some say also. We are flying to Colorado Sunday for a new truck and they are giving me a temp 60 day permit to drive it out of the State, and all tax and license will be paid to Washington State.

call your local DMV and get the facts.only way to be sure.

This is your best advice. Ask here for opinions if you want, but on legal and financial matters go to the source.
  • I bought mine in Mass. Paid Mass at the sale, and paid the rest tl RI since RI has a higher rate.
  • You do not pay the tax in state you buy it. Only the state you register in. There may be some exceptions like CA and other types of taxes they levy. If you buy it and have a vin before you travel you can even save more in your own state by getting a temp regisration for the transportation from your own state. Depends on the state. If I get a vin and take it to my dmv in WY they issue a temp tranport lic then deducts that fee from permanent lic. All of my vehicles come from out of state.

Check with SD dmv and they will give you exact procedure.
  • State the rig is licensed in.

Some states like Washington where I am. IF you pay the tax in SC, then when you register here, if the tax is lower there than here, in this case, more than likely, as it is 9.x% here......you pay the difference from that state to here. OR if by some chance the tax is higher, you get a refund.

Will not say how it will work in your case. but that is how it works here any how!
