Salesmen...sheesh

Thanks to all your advice, I have read up on what my vehicle can tow. It's getting very frustrating that every salesman we have talked to only cares about the towing capacity of my vehicle and tells me not to worry about payload. This most recent one tried to tell me that the tongue weight doesn't add to the payload. I cornered him by asking him if he was saying I could weigh the vehicle unattached to the trailer amd then attached to the trailer and it would be the same. He hemmed and hawed...

Anyone ever find a salesman that doesn't overstate what you can tow?

  • I was a slow learner....first 3 trailers also cost me 3 new tow vehicles because of what the salesman told me I could tow....."sure, no problem."

Reality: There was a Problem. Not enough payload.
  • My family had a car dealership years ago. I know my dad never lied about weights and such. I suspect at least one salesman did if it made him the sale.

With RV salesman, I have found that they will simply always try to get you in the biggest RV on the lot. I know someone who went in to look at class Bs and walked out believing she needed a 40ft MH. When she told me, I asked her how she was going to camp at her favorite campgrounds that could only fit under 28ft. I asked her why she needed all that space when they had just wanted a bed off the ground. Fortunately for her, she didn't have the money at the moment and hadn't signed anything.

Like most things in this world, I think you need to do your own homework, and if you find a salesman you trust (and has proven him/herself) that you stick close.
  • “Surely all these salesmen can't be selling trailers to all these customers that are a bad fit for them...could they?”

That’s why you follow the rule...buy or select the TT first, then match a TV with a safety margin to the TT.
  • I always thought it was fun, after listening to them pontificate, to ask them: "So, Fred, what trailer do you have and what vehicle do you pull it with?". Hardly any of them ever pulled anything.

    Buyer beware.
  • They're trying to sell a camper, most don't know much but some do.

Do this. Go to an RV show and get into a detailed and long conversation about a 20K or so priced rig. Play them along like your super interested and ready to sign the dotted line. Then tell them you changed your mind, it's a little below your budget, and ask if they could direct you to the Prevosts lol.
  • That being said, it makes me wonder if we COULD get more. Surely all these salesmen can't be selling trailers to all these customers that are a bad fit for them...could they?

I have never relied on a salesperson for information regarding a purchase...truck, SUV, TT, MH etc. and with the internet it’s much easier to determine the facts, capacities etc. More than once they have volunteered information (horsepower, weight) and I’ve said nicely “you are wrong...be right or be quiet)
