Same Travel Trailer...new or used? Worth the warranty?

I looked at 2 Forest River Salem Cruise Lite 261BHXL trailers today. One is a new 2018 model for $17983. The other is a used 2017 for $14990. They are basically identical trailers as far as features. The 2017 is in excellent shape...I don't know that I would have even known it was used if he hadn't told me when we looked at it.

Obviously the 2017 doesn't come with a warranty while the 2018 would. Granted, I have no way of knowing whether the 2017 has any invisible issues, but it doesn't appear to. The dealer that has them is one of, if not the, highest rated dealerships in my state...so I don't think they would sell something that was jacked up. Is it worth the $3000 to buy the new trailer and have a factory warranty?
  • He said the 17 was traded in by original buyers and they had purchased it from them. He didn't say why they traded it in.
  • Why don't you get them to throw in a extended warranty as part of the negotiation process on the used unit?

Basically an extended warranty boils down to you pain threshold and how much of a gambler you are. Everything has an eventual chance of breaking, especially the cheap stuff they use in a camper. Within the 1st year, I had mine in for 3 separate issues. All fixed to varying degrees of customer satisfaction.

That being said, I don't think it would have cost near the difference of $3K which is the difference you're looking it. More than likely, since it's a year old and most things are defective/repaired within that time frame, so you're probably good to go.

Do a thorough inspection of the used model to ensure EVERYTHING is working as designed and negotiate hard with them to lower the price and include a warranty if you choose. There is more than $3K worth of depreciation anyway.

  • First question is why do they have a 2017 there. Maybe there is something wrong with it and the dealer don't know. I have always bought new travel trailer cause of the warranty. Now there is a chance that there is nothing wrong with the 2017, maybe the people didn't like it or it was not what they thought it was going to be. I think that the 3,000.00 difference could fix anything that was wrong with it. I would go with the new one, but that is just me.
  • I’d say no provided you know the tires are close to aging out...4 to 5 years...and do a checklist inspection. Put the three grand into a not touchable except for TT repairs account.
