Sanitizing fresh water tank

The de-winterizing seems easy enough but our manual mentions sanitizing the fresh water tank with bleach. Is this a big deal? We purchased a used trailer so I do not know its history.

I have heard various recommendations and it seems like the easiest is to add ΒΌ cup of house hold bleach to 15 gallons of water in our fresh water tanks, run some through the water lines except for the hot water heater tank. Then let it slosh around while we travel for a day. Then, pump in into the gray water tank and add fresh water at the next campsite.

While the fresh water tank holds 46 gals we do not plan on carrying more than 20 gallons at a time.

We would appreciate any other advice.
  • I agree. do it. I can't remember this morning if it's one cup per 15 gallon capacity or 1/4 cup of bleach per 15 gallons of water
  • since you don't know if or when it was ever sanitized, I would just for safety sake. I do mine every spring.
