Do you have an Android smartphone? I use this OBDII Bluetooth reader with the Torque Pro app on the Google Play store. Less than $30 for the combo and can read more than what most of us need. Tach, speed, coolant temp, accelration rate, MPG, and other things. Compare before you buy.
Out of the box it does not monitor trans temps, but you can add custom gauges if you can find the right PID for your truck. But just as ktmrfs said, not all vehicles have that available. My truck has a trans temp readout so I don't need it in the app.
