Seasonal Camping roof protection

HI All, our family is getting a spot for the season this year and the camper will be parked under some pretty heavy spruce trees from May til Sept. I typically cover the tent ends with a homemade pop-up-gizmo type of tarp setup, but to save myself a ton of cleaning come fall, I'd like to put something over the entire roof of the camper. Any suggestions that wouldn't interfere with the rooftop a/c and that can withstand the storm or two we get every season?

thanks. sb
  • good point, I have some spare lumber in the back, might try to make a frame of sorts to ensure that there is some airflow between surfaces.
  • if you are just laying the tarp on the roof, you'll have a good chance of having mold/mildew, since it's not breathable like RV covers.
i tarped my popup over one winter and when i pulled it off in the spring, the roof was nearly completely black.
and i live in a much drier region.
  • thanks for the advice all. This is a provincial park, so the regulations on what one can string up are pretty liberal. Having said that, the last thing I want to do is put up a 20 foot rain catcher. I think the way I'm leaning is to buy a roll of fairly heavy poly and cut to the size of my roof (making allowances for the stack and a/c) then weighing that down with a few 2x4's. same with the awning, but I'll use clips to affix the cover.

ends will likely be going up every time, at least until we are going down every weekend.
  • Before you do anything talk to the park owner about what you want to do. Where we seasonal you could not do what you want because of the way it would look...even an rv cover is not allowed during the season.
  • The only time I left my tent ends open when we left was if it was raining. Otherwise we closed them when we left. Now if you are staying there the whole the time pugs will do a good job.
  • not only would i not leave the tent ends open, i wouldn't choose a hybrid or popup for a seasonal site.
i think that a TT or 5th wheel makes way more sense for a seasonal site.

if you must use one, close up the tent ends and get a RV cover for it, like an Adco one. doesn't take that long to put one on or take off.

Nor would I. RV's are to easy to get into as it is without tent ends being open.

  • Best bet would be a metal cool roof sold on line under many different names. It's posts and an aluminum roof to protect your RV. Can be temporary or pemanent.

    Another option is this

You can get these online or Home Depot/Lowes

You may need to add extensions to the poles to provide height over your A/C
