i think the problem with the Cadillac diesel was one battery would not have any capacity,so the other was trying to make up for the loss of cranking power of other battery and was being damaged in the processes.
I had a shop in the 80's that specialized in that engine. boy did I make a lot of money on that engine :).
back then we had to back them up to the kerosene pump and mix our own winter diesel. just don't let the tax man see you doing it.
