Second battery?

Hello, just need some input for those that have maybe done what I'm thinking of doing.

I have a 2001 Lance Lite 915, no room to add a second battery in camper. Not without major surgery, not something I would do on this camper. A slide camper is in the plans in the next year or two.

I'm thinking of adding a second battery to the camper, but external to the camper. I offroad a lot, and the week long trips I am in one spot, with a Jeep on a trailer. The other trips are with the family, and are moving around every day or two.

So I was thinking of adding a battery box to the trailer tongue, with simple alligator clips to run up to the caper battery (from outside).

The other option would be to put it in the bed, up near the camper plug connection (trap door under sink accesses the truck side in bed). Then add a plug to connect straight to the converter. More work, but fairly easy to do, and also will work on teh non-Jeep trips.

Lots of ramble, but thanks for any input!

  • What battery is in there now?

How big a battery can you fit in there?

Are you wanting to do this becuase you do not have enough power to get you through the night?

And last how are you charging?

The thing with added a batt at a distance is the far away batt will not draw amps very well. I tried that with 6 gauge off my truck 10 feet.

    Just an FYI.
  • I have a single Deka 31. RIght now I have a generator I use just in case, have to use it once in a week. Real light user, just trying to up my capacity to use the furnace at night when needed. Last night was 23 outside with my daughter.

We brought a 100w solar to our last race a few weeks ago, and even though it was mobile, and got it up to 12.5-12.8 throughout the day, it was full sun, and we were moving it. A second battery is going to be the answer for our moab trip coming up. I'll add solar later.

Just wanted to touch on this, it can't be any worse than the battery in the camper, it's 8 gauge from converter to battery, and about a 9 foot run.

Yeah... Your best putting it in the bed and running it to the converter. There should be another lug on the converter. Run the positive there. The ground you will need to pull converter out. I am not sure if there is an extral lug on the ground...

This way the converter will charge both batts
  • I added an additional wire to mine but for a different reason then you. I wanter to increase the size. They ran #6 20 fett, so I ran another #6 to the batts. Togther its about 3 awg..

But there is a white wire taking up the other ground lug on mine. Youll have to tie to the terminal block behind the converter.

  • I added a second battery to my 06 845 by building a rack and placing it under the drivers side wing. Then I used no.4 ga marine grade wire with an Anderson plug. Works great and no noticeable amp loss. I used an AGM battery because you have to lay it on it's side.
  • I added a 2nd battery in my truck bed for my Lance 845. Used a marine type Both-1-2-Off switch under the sink. Works great!
