Here is some information for you who want to purchase chain at Home Depot.
The chain they sell comes in three grades. 36 -46-and 76. 76 being tow chain. Each grade up is much harder then the lower grade.
The same with padlocks. Check the hardness rating.
If a good citizen comes by with his battery powered cut off saw, he best bring a spare battery and a cold drink. He will be there a little while.

I disagree. I cut 3/8" and 5/16" log chain (grades 70 and 76) with my battery powered Milwaukee cutoff tool as well as an occasional padlock that has "frozen" shut from being outside too long. My thieves are too cheap to buy an expensive cordless cutoff tool so they will use bolt cutters. I therefore use the largest braided cables which are next to impossible to cut with bolt cutters. Sure a hacksaw will work but crooks don't want to spend more than a few seconds. If you want to go with chain go with the chain with the flat links, not the round ones.
For my Honda eu2000 genny's I bought the steel security handles. I run two cables through the handles and use heavy padlocks on both ends. When they see my setup they go on looking for easier picking.
