Securing generators while camping?

I just picked up 2 of the SmarterTool AP2000iq inverter/generators from Costco and im looking for some ideas on how to secure these while out camping.
I can see the obvious (putting in truck or trailer) if we leave but I would like to see some ideas for securing in the truck bed or close by the trailer.

  • Chain or cable, they are just going to cut the lock anyways...its the weakest link, so to speak. Get a good lock

Our neighbor that turned out to be a crook and drug dealer(which wife and I couldn't believe till the facts were in) taught me to use heavy duty chain instead of cable. He said crooks don't like to carry bolt cutters to obvious. Hack saw was hard to cut link chain. Cable rope much easier to cut with hack saw or other saws or cutters. Chain wobbles around and makes it harder to cut and more noise when cutting. OH thanks Fred, I should of asked him how he knew all this, but didn't dawn on me at the time. I now use chain link that is steel about 1/4 inch in dia. Get it at Home Depot or Lowes. At least if something does grow legs they have to work for it. But hopefully crooks will move on to easier pickings or should I say cuttings of somebody else. But if you leave unattended all bets are off. I do try to park (restaurants etc) where I can see vehicles from window.

My 2 cents and I've never had anything taken from me at a campground, even before I started locking up stuff. Other than a raccoon made off with a loaf of bread one time, does that count?
  • I saw these New York Legend chain and lock combos at REI the other day in the bike section. They were really impressive. I've got a pair of 48" bolt cutters - if they did manage to cut this chain, the jaws would be ruined. And they come with a $2,000 theft protection.

  • I think the best you're going to be able to do is some steel rope and a paddle lock. It would still only be a deterrent.
